Heaven and a new body
At the end of chapter three the Apostle Paul, in this letter written from a Roman prison, points us to heaven.
20 For our conversation is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ:
21 Who shall change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto his glorious body, according to the working whereby he is able even to subdue all things unto himself.
He gives us the hope of Christ’s return and informs us regarding our new body, which will be in a glorified, incorruptible, immortal likeness to the body of Christ, which we will finally truly be.
In the meantime
Then in chapter four he gives us some advice for life here on earth in our human form. His admonition is to stand fast in the Lord. Don’t quit following Jesus now.
1Therefore, my brethren dearly beloved and longed for, my joy and crown, so stand fast in the Lord, my dearly beloved.
And he follows it up with some practical lessons for life.
1. Get along
Word got to Paul in prison that two sisters in the church were at odds. Evidently the contention was of such intensity and duration that it was reported to Paul. Maybe he asked a Philippian brother visiting him about the two ladies whom he knew as they had been part of his ministry.
“Well brother Paul,” the visitor replied as he leaned in to quietly tell the Apostle about his two helpers. “The truth is, They are not getting along very well.”
Paul’s response is two-fold.
2I beseech Euodias, and beseech Syntyche, that they be of the same mind in the Lord.
3 And I intreat thee also, true yokefellow, help those women which laboured with me in the gospel, with Clement also, and with other my fellowlabourers, whose names are in the book of life.
He speaks directly to Euodias and Syntyche. Get along. And he tells the Pastor to help them get along.
Sometimes some folk just need some Pastoral counseling.
Let us do WIT, whatever it takes, to stop the dissension in the church. People sitting on opposite sides of the church because of a disagreement infect the service and hinder the move of the Spirit. And they themselves profit little from their time in church. It is imperative that we work out our differences and get along. Amen.
2. Secondly, Be happy.
4 Rejoice in the Lord always: and again I say, Rejoice.
Don’t be a sourpuss or a grouch. Be intentional about smiling and being pleasant.
Lighten up the room when you walk in. Don’t darken it. I like Psalm 4:7:
7 Thou hast put gladness in my heart, more than in the time that their corn and their wine increased.
Let the Lord fill you with gladness that exceeds that of the farmer celebrating a great harvest.
Be glad, not mad or sad or bad. Rejoice always. Repeat.
3. Ahh, Moderation
5 Let your moderation be known unto all men. The Lord is at hand.
What does that mean?
Don’t be an extremist. Extremely spiritual, religious, holy, or critical of those of lesser understanding than you think you have. Don’t be an annoying religious weirdo. At home, at church, and especially at work. Don’t be preaching to your coworkers all the time. You were not hired to preach. You were hired to work. Moderate, moderate, moderate.
Here are six synonyms from the Greek: seemly, suitable, equitable, fair, mild, gentle, patient.
Dictionary.com says: restraint; avoidance of extremes or excesses; temperance.
Don’t be a nut. Don’t be an argumentative, fanatical saint. Don’t be the person people refer to as whacko. Don’t eat too much either. The Lord is watching. Amen.
4.Don’t worry, pray.
6 Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.
7 And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
Careful here is to be anxious; to be troubled with cares. Paul says allow nothing to bring that upon you. Don’t worry, pray. Careful for nothing, but in everything. Bring it all before the Lord in prayer. If you are Pentecostal pray in the Spirit, in tongues. And make thanksgiving part of your presentation before the Lord. Peace will be your answer until the matters are resolved. A surpassing, unexplainable peace, that of God, will keep you from going bonkers.
5. And, think differently.
8 Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.
The eight point cure for panic attacks. Think on these things. Amen. -PJF-
And now a word from Pastor Shirley…
You Have The Right to Remain Silent
I have heard so many statements over the past few months. Everyone has something they feel they need to share with the world regarding current situations and circumstances. Government officials have been holding press conferences and updates on the new developments in our cities, states, and our country. So much talking from so many individuals.
Instead of thinking and sorting through all that has been said… people make more statements. They pressure others to make statements, to let their voice be heard. In all that I am hearing it seems as if people are saying things just to say them. On social media, I rarely see individuals sharing his or her own thoughts.
Proverbs 18:21 says, Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.
I believe that every person is accountable for the words they speak and for the actions they take.
I believe we have authority to speak good things and bad things into existence.
I do not want to waste any time speaking nonsense and foolishness that will create undesirable outcomes.
I understand this Bible verse. I know how powerful words are and because of that, I choose to exercise my right to be silent. I want to speak life and encouraging words.
I want truth to resonate from the inside out. -SAF-
